Contemporary Issue Announcement 2020-2021

Since 2010, the President-Elect has been charged with selecting a contemporary topic for the association to explore throughout the coming year. This gives us the opportunity to focus on a topic that is currently generating discussion in our field or one for which we have passion. The Contemporary Issues Committee will then provide opportunities for members to learn and engage around the topic.

I’m excited to share the 2020-21 GLACUHO Contemporary Issues will be International Students Programs and Services that help build global societies on our campuses.

International Students make up 5.5% of the total United States higher education population as of November 18, 2019, according to 2019 Open door Report on International Education Exchange. How can we build strong relationship with our international students who live within our residence hall communities? How can we create and expand our knowledge to help international students feel a part of our residential life communities? How can we engage our students to live and learn from international students to become better global citizens?

This contemporary issue seeks to provide and deliver services and programming that will engage stronger and healthier communities by interacting with international students.

  • Benchmark with peer institutions regarding Best Practices on how college and universities residence life staff program and interact with this population in the residence halls.
  • How colleges and universities handle the “red tape” and restriction on hiring International Students as staff members?
  • What type of training do you have for staff (undergraduate, graduate and professional staff) that work directly with International Students?
  • How do you engage other students to interact with International students, how do you house or place International students in housing?
  • What educational resources are available for International Students to help them make the transition to US college life?
  • What other offices do you work with to help International Students transition to US classes and programs?
  • Identifying barriers that hinder the development and new innovative approaches to making International students feeling a part of our communities.
  • How has COVID-19 directly and indirectly effect International Student enrollment on college campus?
