Fear. It is almost always fear. I freely admit that I am afraid at times of saying a new idea out loud or suggesting that a new path be forged. Although Student Affairs (and Residence Life, in particular) prides itself in finding the "originals", it often resists bringing the originals to its own ranks. The dreaded phrase "the way we've always done it" rears its ugly head all too often.

I suggest that either fear or a lack of understanding of one person's ability to affect significant situations stands in the way of our students and the risks they should be taken. All too often, I encounter a student who (once I dig deep with them) will admit to having issues or concerns with the world around them but do not feel tha they have the power to make a difference. In many ways, I share this thought, but I always find myself incredibly willing to help them equip themselves with the tools to move forward in addressing their issues/concerns, regardless of just how big their Goliath might be.3

As such, quickly finding a resolution to a problem and restoring order in the quickest way possible is often our target. We rely on past practices to inform our future decisions. Allowing (perhaps even mandating) time for brainstorming and reflection - kissing frog as discussed in Chapter 2 - is one of the most novel ideas I have seen espoused in a field craving efficiency.

That comes from fear. Unfortunately, I did not come pre-programmed for fear so I am usually the one in trouble for being one of the 'originals.'

For students, I do try to help them understand that taking risks means being ready for consequences, and with unknown outcomes, those consequences could be good or bad.
