In what ways, if at all, does this phenomenon occur within the residence halls, and how can housing professionals impact it?</span></span>]]></description>

They come up with new ideas and help problem solve to boost attendance at at events in ways that we haven't thought about.  So often, we can get caught in the mindset of "this is how we've always done it."  For me, its refreshing to learn from their ways and try something new.  ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[I agree with Brian. I have often enjoyed and built the strongest relationships with the non-conforming students in my halls. I think it would benefit our communities to help all students understand the importance of dissent. Continuing to learn about and support students with dissenting behaviors is something all housing professionals can do to encourage "originals" and help students develop into active members of their local, national, and world communities.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[I think it is important to take a moment to think about how these original students come to our attention, what these dissenting behaviors look like. I often find that these "originals" come to my attention as a result of a crisis situation or something relating to Student Conduct. From that point, I truly seek to make allies out of these student and to help raise them up. Some of the best originals I have encountered through my career have been those who made noise (in either positive or negative ways, depending on policy and point of view) or those who have cared enough to speak up. ]]></description>

Crisis situations and student conduct are the times that I most see "originals" and both situations are the times when it is the most important to learn about the student. Taking the time to hear their stories and process their experiences can help us as housing professionals learn about our students and also helps the student identify support systems in place.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[I think this needs to start with staff, and knowing that people with different ideas just might have something valuable to bring to the table.  What good does it do to support students if their ideas are just going to get shot down when presented to staff later?  If there are too many, "that's the way we always do it" staff members around, then they need to be reminded that new ideas could be good first.     ]]></description>
