Humans are naturally inclined to feel the need to be a part of a group, to be part of an idea that is larger than themselves. If give the right motivation and encouragement we will buy into an idea, a "why". We see people doing great things all the time, but until we understand why we may not be motivated to join. When people are not proud of where they work they have no identity or affiliation with the group to feel pride for. Some of what he speaks about here are also concepts that he brings up in his other book "Leaders Eat Last".

I agree with the biology behind the Golden Circle. We discuss Maslow's hierarchy of needs when focusing on our work with students and their development and this is in line with that concept. Additionally, the emphasis on student involvement and engagement speaks to this as well.

The quote that spoke most to me in regards to this concept was, "we are drawn to leaders and organizations that are good at communicating what they believe. Their ability to make us feel like we belong, to make us feel special, safe and not alone is part of what gives them the ability to inspire us" (p. 55). I never viewed inspiration and leadership from this standpoint before, but Sinek's rationale makes sense.

Sarah, I appreciate your reference to Maslow's hierarchy of needs because I believe that compliments the biological concepts Sinek is discussing and our work as residence life professionals.
