Established in 2015, the Mid-Level Institute (MLI) is a two-day professional development seminar featuring a range of activities for professionals who are currently in mid-level roles and are considering a move to the next level and/or searching for opportunities to improve their skills in their current positions. Mid-level professionals who may be most interested should have several years of experience, usually supervise entry level staff, and are in roles equivalent to a coordinator and/or assistant director level.

MLI will occur June 7 - 8, 2020, in Springfield, IL. MLI will cost $30.00 per person and will include meals and housing.

Participants engaged in MLI will:

  • Identify skills and perspectives needed for development and advancement in Housing;
  • Connect with faculty who are veteran professionals in residence life and related fields;
  • Discuss their own experiences as mid-level professionals in Housing;
  • Discuss lessons, successes and challenges learned in their roles;
  • Create a professional development plan; and
  • Evaluate their role as mid-level managers in their organizations.

At MLI, participants will attend sessions facilitated by faculty members who are veteran professionals in housing/residence life. The faculty will provide valuable, practical information about surviving and thriving at the next level.

Activities during MLI are designed to allow time for informal interactions in addition to the scheduled sessions. To offer the appropriate mentoring environment, twelve participants will be accepted. Participants will be placed into small groups and assigned a faculty member who will provide individual advice, support and suggestions for future professional growth, involvements and activities.

Topics for MLI will vary from year-to-year depending on the expertise of the selected faculty members. However, in general, all topics are relevant to professionals at this point in their careers.

Featured MLI Topical Areas (Specific areas to be determined by faculty):

  • Career Progression
