Originals: How Non-conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant

The Professional Foundations Committee is sponsoring the 2017 GLACUHO Book Club. This year's selection is "Originals: How Non-conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant. We will be exploring themes related to the book in online discussion forums.

Description from Amazon: Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports, and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act, and manage fear and doubt; how parents and teachers can nurture originality in children; and how leaders can build cultures that welcome dissent. Learn from an entrepreneur who pitches his start-ups by highlighting the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who overturned the rule of secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees for failing to criticize him, and a TV executive who didn’t even work in comedy but saved Seinfeld from the cutting-room floor. The payoff is a set of groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and improving the status quo.

This year we will be using the GLACUHO website's Discussion Forums to share our thoughts on the book. On July 5, July 12, and July 19, a new Discussion Forum topic will open up with a few prompts for discussion.

Week of July 5 - Discussion on Chapters 1-2
Week of July 12 - Discussion on Chapters 3-4
Week of July 19 - Discussion on Chapters 5-6
Week of July 28 at 2:00 PM EST - GoTo Meeting with discussion on Chapters 7-8 and overall book

The book club will run in the month of July. Participants will read the book and interact with other participants through the GLACUHO Discussion Forums throughout the duration of the club.

On DATE TBD , there will be a GoToMeeting for participants that will serve as the culminating event for the book club. More information will be sent to participants as it becomes available.
